A Smashed Windshield

Today while driving to the dump a limb fell on my truck windshield and smashed it.

It reminded me of an even worse day almost exactly 23 years ago. It was October 4, 1987.

A tree-not a tree limb-fell on the car being driven by a good friend of mine.

The tree killed my friend and his mother-in-law. It broke the neck of my friend's wife but left their 2 year old daughter harmless.

It was yet another reminder that the older I get the more I realize that those 'bad' days you think you're having could be a whole lot worse.

Another Great Weekend

Weekends like the one just past remind me how much life has come full circle.

It seems like just yesterday that we were watching Pete & Becky at various athletic events.

Now we're watching grand children.

This is a picture of Brooke at a soccer game. Before that we were watching Courtney & Cole playing on the playground.

Is it possible that I'm getting old? Yes, and it's not so bad.

Look for more pictures of grand children either on my website or here as time marches on.

The Republican "Pledge to America"

Here's a loose translation of the Republican's recently rolled out "Pledge to America".

If we, the republican party, regain control of congress in the upcoming elections, we hereby pledge to:

-repeal health care reform thereby making it possible for insurance companies and HMO's to hold the American people hostage again. After all, insurance companies are our real constituents.

-resort to the tried (and failed) policies of the Bush/Cheney era.

-run up our own national deficit like before but this time call it something else so we can still blame the Obama administration.

-continue to throw obstacles in the way of real progress but say it's justified because the voters told us to do it.

-provide even more power and wealth to the already most powerful and wealthiest segment of society. Oh, the rest of you? Two words and they're not 'Hi there'.

-forget this 'dialogue' and 'diplomacy' crap with the Irans and North Koreas of the world. Bomb them into submission. Who needs 'em?

-cut spending-a lot-in Medicare, Social Security and Veterans' benefits. Who cares about those people anyway? We got ours!!

-and, finally, continue to spread division, mistrust, hostility and confrontation throughout the country. It builds character.

Now get out there and vote Republican. Oh. One more thing. Watch out for those Tea Party wing nuts. We're not too sure about them!

Another great day with Courtney

Today was my day with Courtney.  We played store and went to story time at the library this morning.  Then this afternoon we rested and did a craft for her mother.

On the way home we played "I Spy".  Courtney would spy something and tell me what color it is.  I have to guess what it is.

The problem comes when I've asked her if it's in the truck or outside somewhere.  Usually, she says it's in the truck so of course I guess only items there.

After I've exhausted the supply of red, green, blue, yellow, etc. stuff in the truck, I give up.  She then says it's a tree.  She explains why I couldn't get it by simply pointing out she changed her mind.

Life with Courtney.  A great day.

What should one make of the Tea Party?

The last round of primaries should convince anyone who may have doubted it that the 'Tea Party' movement is a fact.

Unfortunately, many of the people this movement is putting forward are largely empty-headed gas bags who have not a clue as to how to address the great issues of the day but have found a way to appeal to the fear and anger of mostly republicans.

They just might turn out to be more harmful and dangerous than any political group to ever come forward.

This election season is shaping up to be very interesting. Stay tuned.

All in All A Good Weekend

In spite of this being dreary, cool Sunday evening, it marks the end of a very good weekend.

Saturday was Courtney's 4th birthday celebration video and pictures of which can be seen on georgeswebpage.com.

Then this morning it was off to Fairfield Hills to join Mike, Becky and the girls in their latest hobby-geocaching (More on this in an upcoming Newtown.Patch piece).

Then after that we all went to the Governor's Horse Guard open house where we met Pete, Jen and the boys.

After a little rest this afternoon, it was grocery shopping and back home for good.

A very good weekend indeed.

Hey! Let's Burn A Book!

Did you hear about the Florida based World Outreach Center's plans to burn Qurans to commemorate the September 11th attacks?

Isn't that a great idea?

Boy, we'll sure show those terrorists, won't we? Never mind that book burning is completely contrary to Christian ideals. Never mind that the Constitution of the United States allows for freedom of expression-be it written or oral. Never mind that the Koran is the 'bible' of a very large religious group the vast majority of which are peaceful, caring people. Never mind common sense and rational thought.

Never mind any of that. Let's just celebrate the destruction of ideas and the beliefs of others through violence and narrow minded rants.

Boy, we'll show them! Unfortunately what we'll be showing them is that we're a pack of idiots and hypocrites.

The lunatic fringe strikes again. God help us.
