The other morning I saw Tom Hanks on the Today show and he was talking about first his new movie and second his experiences with COVID19. In the conversation he mentioned how bewildered he was that people were making such a fuss about wearing a mask. He pointed out that years ago, i.e. World War II era people, there was a sense among everyone that we all must do our part. He went on to observe that no one really knew how long the war was going to last yet they did what they had to do anyway for the good of the nation.
It's that sentiment that's what's missing today. Here we are in the middle of a pandemic that's taking lives every day and yet there are those who insist if they don't want to wear a mask they don't have to-in spite of the fact that while they themselves may not be in immediate danger the folks around them could be. There's no sense of community. There's no consideration for the next person. We are not unified like we used to be.
Why is that? It's very simple. No example has been set by our leadership. In fact just the opposite has been done. Every effort has been made too divide the country. Us vs Them. That's the attitude and unless it changes it will be our ruination.
